How Many Shots Were Fired?

Three witnesses who were at the windows on the fifth floor of the book depository said they heard three shots. Investigators found three shell casings on the sixth floor of the book depository and none anywhere else. But there was a problem. People standing outside the building said they heard more than three shots. However, this made sense to investigators. The bullets flying over the heads of these people were going faster than the speed of sound. The people first heard each bullet crack the air as it went by them. Next they heard a second boom, which was the delayed sound of each bullet leaving the rifle. The hard evidence indicated that three shots were fired.

Witness statements and evidence indicated that the three shots were all fired from the sixth floor of the book depository. However, some witnesses said they heard shots coming from a grassy knoll near the book depository. Frazier and his team conducted a test in which they placed investigators in key spots and then fired a weapon from the book depository window. Some investigators confirmed they heard what seemed to be shots coming from the grassy knoll and even a few other places around the book depository. Each of these areas was thoroughly searched for evidence of a gun having been fired there. None was found. It was clear, the buildings and the hills caused an echo. The evidence supported that one man fired from the sixth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository.
